PM Modi at BRICS: India's Vision for a Resilient Global South
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 6-7, 2025, underscored India’s continued commitment to strengthening multilateralism and amplifying the voice of the Global South. As India prepares to assume the BRICS presidency in 2026, PM Modi outlined a forward-looking agenda, emphasizing resilience, innovation, and a “humanity first” approach to global challenges.
Championing the Global South's Voice
A recurring theme in PM Modi’s addresses at the BRICS Summit was the need to address the “double standards” faced by developing countries. He passionately argued that the Global South often receives “little more than token gestures” on critical issues like climate finance, sustainable development, and access to technology. PM Modi stressed that global institutions, designed in the 20th century, are ill-equipped to handle 21st-century challenges and called for their comprehensive reform, including the UN Security Council, WTO, and multilateral development banks. This push for reform aims to ensure greater representation and a more equitable distribution of resources and decision-making power, reflecting the increasing weight of emerging economies in the global landscape.
Redefining BRICS: Resilience and Innovation
Looking ahead to India’s BRICS presidency in 2026, PM Modi proposed a fresh interpretation of the acronym: Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability. This vision reflects India’s ambition to steer the bloc towards addressing contemporary global challenges with a proactive and collaborative spirit. The focus on resilience aims to fortify member nations against economic shocks, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical uncertainties. Meanwhile, the emphasis on innovation seeks to harness technological advancements for inclusive development, particularly for the Global South.
PM Modi highlighted India’s successful digital transformation and offered to share its expertise, including platforms like UPI and RuPay, with fellow BRICS nations to foster digital collaboration and bridge the digital divide. This proactive stance underscores India’s belief in practical cooperation to achieve shared developmental goals.
PM Modi’s active engagement at the 17th BRICS Summit, coupled with India’s forthcoming presidency, signals a period of intensified collaboration and a concerted effort to shape a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable global order. India’s leadership within BRICS is poised to play a pivotal role in addressing the complex challenges facing the world today.
