Canada has consistently played a pivotal role within the Group of Seven (G7), an informal forum comprising seven of the world’s most advanced economies and the European Union. More than just a host, Canada actively shapes the G7 agenda, driving discussions and initiatives on critical global challenges. Its recurring presidency of the G7 provides a significant platform to champion Canadian values and priorities on the international stage.

The G7 was established in the 1970s as a response to global economic shocks, particularly the oil crisis. Over the decades, its scope has broadened significantly to encompass a wide array of pressing issues, including climate change, international peace and security, public health, digital transition, and global inequality. As an informal grouping, the G7 operates on consensus, with decisions relying on the individual ratification of member states. Canada’s involvement in the G7 dates back to 1976 when it was invited to join the initial Group of Six (G6). Since then, Canada has hosted the G7 summit six times, most recently in Charlevoix, Quebec, in 2018, and currently holds the presidency for 2025, with the summit taking place in Kananaskis, Alberta. Each time Canada takes the helm, it seizes the opportunity to highlight specific global concerns and advance solutions.

Throughout its G7 presidencies, Canada has demonstrated leadership by introducing innovative initiatives and fostering progress on ambitious priorities. For instance, the 2010 Muskoka Initiative saw Canada and its partners commit billions towards maternal, newborn, and child health. In 2018, the Charlevoix Summit delivered the “Charlevoix Declaration on Quality Education,” galvanizing significant funding for women’s and girls’ education in crisis situations, and led to the establishment of the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council (GEAC), which has become a permanent feature of G7 presidencies.

Its efforts often bridge divides between differing economic philosophies among G7 members, striving for consensus and collective action.
